A substantial proportion of the Department is working on
partial differential equations of one form or another, and
interests range from rigorous analytical studies to the
numerical solution of equations with computers.
Equations with a geometric flavour are studied by
Topping
and Micallef.
These often arise from the Calculus of Variations
which is an area of specialisation of Topping,
Micallef and
Friesecke.
Equations with a stochastic component are studied by
Elworthy,
Robinson J
Tribe and
Stuart.
Dynamical systems overlaps with the field of PDE. For example
Robinson J studies
the dynamics of the Navier-Stokes equations.
The numerical solution of PDE is investigated by
Barkley,
Plechac
and Stuart.
Other users of PDE include
Nazarenko,
Baesens,
Burroughs,
Kozlovski,
MacKay,
Rand,
Stewart,
Zaboronski.
