Algebra

. ........
The main areas of research in algebra in the department and the people working in them are:

See also under Algebraic Geometry for links with geometry.

There are approximately 17 research students supervised by the above staff members, of whom 7 are currently doing the MSc.

A number of seminars are held weekly during term time.

  • The algebra seminar meets on Thursdays and features talks of general interest by staff members, research students, and visiting speakers.
  • The Lie Theory Seminar meets on Mondays, 4-5. The theme may be different this year: one suggestion is to go in the direction of symmetric functions following the program at the Newton's institute.
  • The ring theory seminar is a weekly informal meeting involving interested staff and graduate students. The current topic is clique theory.

The following graduate level courses are currently being offered. It is likely that there will be one or two reading courses in addition to these.

MA442 Group Theory
MA453 Lie Algebras
MA5N7 Commutative Rings and Homological Algebra
