British Women in Mathematics Discussion Day

12 February 2000

Organisers: Caroline Series (cms@maths.warwick.ac.uk) &
Helen Robinson (mtx057@coventry.ac.uk)

This meeting will be a follow up to the discussion held at British Women Mathematicians' Meeting in September 1999 in Edinburgh on the topic:
  • Why is it harder for women doing Maths at Cambridge to get a first?

Figures show that in many subjects at Cambridge, women tend to do significantly less well in the final exams than their male counterparts with the same entry qualifications. Cambridge is so concerned about this that they have commissioned Dr Chris Mann in their Faculty of Social and Political Sciences to investigate. Although not the only subject in which the phenomenon occurs, she has picked mathematics as a main focus. We are invited to hear her findings and share our experiences. Although the topic raises many interesting wider questions, in the hopes of getting somewhere the discussion will focus on the Cambridge system.

This meeting is being organised to continue the Edinburgh discussion and to allow wider participation. Any significant outcomes will be incorporated in Dr Mann's report. A small amount of funding is available for research students wishing to attend.

  • 12:30 Those who wish meet for lunch in Warwick University Arts Centre Cafe (near bookshop and opposite ticket desk).
  • 2:00-4:30 Discussion in Mathematics Institute.
  • Tea will be available for a small charge.

Anyone wishing to attend should inform Helen Robinson mtx057@coventry.ac.uk.
