She came to the Institute as a temporary secretary working in the General Office doing all types of secretarial and clerical work, including answering questions at the reception counter, doing senior academic secretarial work, and dealing with student matters.

In 1991 Peta became the Mathematics Research Centre Secretary which involved her in the organisation of the annual symposia, workshops, and conferences. She dealt with correspondence, arranging the accommodation for visitors, and answered endless questions from both event organisers and visitors.

The position of MRC Business Manager became available in 1997 and Peta was the obvious person for this job. This post gave her the opportunity to become involved in the administration, finance and decision making of the MRC.
