MULTIMAT
Central

This interdisciplinary network named MULTIMAT focuses on Multiscale modelling and characterization for phase transitions of advanced materials from a very broad perspective embracing recent developments in mathematics (Calculus of variations, nonlinear partial differential equations, multiscale analysis and computation, discrete-to-continuum limits), thermodynamics, ab-initio computations, materials modelling and characterization. It provides excellent training and research opportunities for young researchers in mathematics, computer science, physics, materials science and engineering, including special training courses and exchange programmes with young researchers in the other network teams.

The Oxford group and Warwick node are located in two of leading international mathematics departments. The group focusses on the use of nonlinear analysis and numerical methods to illuminate problems of solid phase transformations, in particular those of martensitic nucleation and microstructure morphology, the passage from atomistic to continuum models, interfacial energy and micromagnetics.
